Devolution is a tool of Westminster control

Devolution is a tool of Westminster; a trap for independence seeking Scots. Those who saw it as a stepping stone to independence have been slowly drowning in the quagmire of Westminster without even realising it.

The genius of Westminster’s devolution of powers to Scotland

Devolution changed the goal posts for those of us seeking independence without actually giving away any real power. Before we just needed to send a majority of independence MPs to Westminster and negotiations would begin. The Unionists saw that coming so played a true blinder on Scots. Giving us a parliament and an administration of elected officials.

This had many effects upon our political movement.

  • First, we no longer concentrated upon Westminster which to this day is where the real power remains.
  • Second it took Scots a while to evaluate this new devolved parliament and its elected administration.
  • Third it changed how scots were told they had to seek independence. We now must have our First Minister write a letter to the Prime Minister asking permission to hold a referendum.
  • The Fourth thing it also did was remove the desire of many Scottish politicians from becoming an MP at Westminster. It gave them a substitute career closer to home.

Why am I saying our MSPs and parliament have no real power? Every piece of legislation passed at the Scottish Parliament must be endorsed by Westminster. They have the power to say no to anything that they do not like. In fact it can remove the Scottish Parliament from existence if it chose to do so. How can there be real power in a devolved parliament if it exists purely at the pleasure of another? As I said at the beginning Devolution is a tool of Westminster control. Don’t fall for the illusion
